Male Pattern Hair Loss – How and why does it happen?

Male pattern hair loss is also know as alopecia and is characterized by a receding hairline on the top of the head. Hair loss can occur due to various reasons in males; when it occurs due to hormonal changes or is hereditary in nature, it is known as androgenetic alopecia or simply balding.

Mostly, male pattern hair loss is inherited and such people have increased sensitivity to the hormonal compound dihydrotestosterone or DHT which is a derivative of the male sex hormone, testosterone. DHT is known to shorten the hair cycle phase which can lead to miniaturization of the hair follicles which in turn can lead to the growth of finer hairs. This is largely caused by the attitude of the society to such people giving out a feeling that bald men are less attractive and successful than men with good hair.
