Male Pattern Hair Loss – How and why does it happen?

0

Male pattern hair loss is also know as alopecia and is characterized by a receding hairline on the top of the head. Hair loss can occur due to various reasons in males; when it occurs due to hormonal changes or is hereditary in nature, it is known as androgenetic alopecia or simply balding.

Mostly, male pattern hair loss is inherited and such people have increased sensitivity to the hormonal compound dihydrotestosterone or DHT which is a derivative of the male sex hormone, testosterone. DHT is known to shorten the hair cycle phase which can lead to miniaturization of the hair follicles which in turn can lead to the growth of finer hairs. Since the new hair that is grown is not strong enough, they tend to break easily leading to hair loss.

Male pattern hair loss can have deep seated and serious psychological impact on most males leading to low self esteem, depression, low confidence, shying away from social gatherings and a feeling of unattractiveness. This is largely caused by the attitude of the society to such people giving out a feeling that bald men are less attractive and successful than men with good hair.

Today, there are various treatments for male pattern hair loss which can range from cosmetics to transplants to medications. There are doctors who specialize in the treatment of hair loss and are known as trichologists. Some of the hair loss treatment options include hair replacement or transplantation, cosmetic solutions, hair bonding, Minoxidil solution and medications like Finasteride.

It is advisable to choose cosmetic or similar treatments to treat male pattern hair loss rather than resort to medications. Another alternative is to use well fitted wigs which are also safe for long term use. Whatever treatment you opt for, it is important to make sure that it will not cause any side effects on the body with constant use. But the best thing is to go natural; after all, beauty is only skin deep.
